If you're not really sure what Salsa is all about, or your whole concept of Salsa is based on Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez music videos, then you had better check out some of the clips below!
This is me social dancing with Shelley at the Mustang Bar. Shelley and I won the WA State Salsa Championships in 2005!
Here I am social dancing with the gorgeous Cristina, a great dancer all the way from Switzerland. This is at The Mustang Bar on a Tuesday night. Unfortunately you can't see our legs/feet, but you can see how the style of Salsa I do is different to most of the Cuban stuff you see around Perth. Thanks for the dance Cristina!
Shelley and I again. A bit boring, maybe just skip this one... :)
Probably my favourite 30 second salsa clip. This goes back to when I first started salsa and was downloading video clips from everywhere I could find to learn more about it. I still love watching it today (though I wish it were longer), it captures everything I love about salsa: the raw energy, the rough-and-ready attitude, awesome music, and you can see how much fun they're having just going all out. Yeah it's a bit sloppy here and there, but that's half the fun! :) Oh the guy dancing is the world famous Johnny Vasquez!
Yesenia Peralta and Danny with a simply beautiful routine! Love the music!
Nancy and Rudy. A beautiful couple having a great time playing and goofing around. These are New York style On2 dancers. The timing of the footwork is a bit different to the "normal" On1 style of Salsa.
Luda and Oliver! This is at a competition, in Puerto Rico I guess, and I'm pretty sure that the song is chosen randomly, and all the dancing is improvised. Makes this video even more amazing! Note the bit halfway through where Luda continues dancing while fixing her top that came undone! Grace under fire!
Salsa battle: Tropical Gem vs U-Tribe! Awesome!! Check out the rest of the series on youtube.
Griselle Ponce dancing with 5 guys. This video is why I love salsa! And it looks like at the end Super Mario (a very famous instructor) make an appearance to finish the song off.
Awesome routine from Alyra Lennox and Fernando Sosa of Tropical Gem. Alyra is one of my favourite female salsa dancers!
Here's an example of a Salsa Rueda being danced near the beach in Israel. The steps they do aren't particularly interesting, but you can see how the structure of the rueda works. Wait a minute in this video for the camera to zoom out so you can see the circle better. The guy in the white T-shirt is calling the rueda.
Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroiter at the World Salsa Championships 2005. Oliver Pineda and Luda Kroiter are Australia's own World Salsa Champions, from Latin Motion in Sydney. You may have also seen Luda on Dancing with the Stars. Have a look around youtube for more videos from the 2006 Championships, which they also won.
Junior & Emily Alabi at the World Salsa Championships. A great young brother and sister couple.
Frankie Martinez and Nancy social dancing (and another video from a different angle). Frankie is a legend in the Salsa scene, with a very unorthodox social dancing style, which can be hard to appreciate for the uninitiated!
Frankie Martinez social dancing - Frankie again!
Here's a little bonus clip if you made it all the way to the end. Jennifer Lopez being interviewed, expresses how much she loves salsa and then has a surprise dance with Albert Torres!
And if little YouTube clips aren't enough for you, head to your local video store and grab one of these movies that feature Salsa!
